Electric or plug-in Volvos feature a regenerative deceleration system that uses the electric motor to slow the vehicle. As a result, a significant portion of deceleration during driving is handled directly by the electric powertrain, leading to less frequent use of the traditional hydraulic braking system. Over time, this condition can cause dangerous corrosion of the braking system’s friction components, compromising not only longevity but also overall performance and safety.
For this reason, and considering the intrinsic characteristics of these vehicles (BEVs), the braking systems of electric cars must meet a series of fundamental requirements: excellent oxidation resistance, quiet operation, lightweight design, and reduced residual torque (drag torque).
