Why not Paint your own Brake Calipers?
Why not Paint your own Brake Calipers?
Some may consider painting their own brake calipers or purchasing used, repainted calipers as an alternative, but Brembo strongly advises against this. Painting brake calipers is a delicate operation and comes with several drawbacks. In this article, we highlight five reasons why, based on our experience, we do not recommend it. Of course, everyone is free to make their own decision about their vehicle.
While there may be professionals capable of performing this operation correctly, we frequently receive reports of malfunctions in calipers following improper painting processes. The issue is not the paint itself, but rather the preliminary work on the hydraulic components. In many cases, the removal and reinstallation of pistons are not done correctly, or in some cases, not done at all. If the caliper undergoes a “baking process” for paint curing, excessive heat can damage the piston seals, compromising the caliper’s function.
The variables related to the process used and the expertise of the person performing the work are numerous and difficult to predict in advance. For this reason, Brembo simply discourage this type of intervention on such a critical active safety component as the braking system.
