Third consecutive round for MotoGP, as well as the first of the four scheduled for November.

There have been 25 Grands Prix held at Sepang, where racing first took place in 1999 and has been held every year since, with the exception of 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. Last year, the Malaysian Grand Prix recorded 190,977 spectators, a new record for this circuit, in addition to contributing more than 150 million euros to the Gross Domestic Product.

GP data

According to Brembo engineers, who for the 11th consecutive year have been working closely with all the MotoGP teams, the 5.543 km Petronas Sepang International Circuit falls into the category of circuits that are highly demanding on brakes. On a scale of 1 to 6, it has a difficulty index of 5 because the brakes are used for 35 seconds per lap, also due to the presence of 11 braking sections: 4 are classified as High, one is Medium, and the remaining 6 are Low.

The hardest corner

The hardest corner for the braking system at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit is the last one before the finish line: MotoGP bikes lose 256 km/h, the 2nd highest delta of the year, dropping from 320 km/h to 64 km/h in 5.5 seconds, during which they cover 259 metres thanks to a load of 5.5 kg on the brake lever. Deceleration is 1.5 g and Brembo brake fluid pressure peaks at 11.7 bar, while disc temperature reaches 620 °C.

Three variants

Although not to the same extent as Motegi, Buriram, and Spielberg, Sepang is also a demanding circuit for MotoGP Brembo brakes, and it is very likely that riders will opt for 340 mm and 355 mm Brembo carbon discs. The larger the disc diameter, the greater the braking force and heat dissipation. On the other hand, increasing the diameter also increases weight, with negative effects on acceleration and changes of direction. For this reason, the choice of carbon brake disc diameter is always a compromise between braking power and weight.

Two streaks to end

Ducati is the most successful manufacturer at Sepang, with 9 MotoGP wins by 6 different riders: 2 victories each for Casey Stoner, Andrea Dovizioso and Francesco Bagnaia, and one each for Loris Capirossi, Enea Bastianini and Alex Marquez. Marc Marquez is still missing from the roll call, as he has not finished on the podium here since 2019, when he was 2nd with Honda, the manufacturer with which he won in 2014 and 2018. At Sepang, Aprilia’s best results are two seventh places in the Grand Prix and a 6th place in the Sprint. Which of these two negative streaks will end this weekend?

The first radial for the first time

At Sepang in MotoGP, only Italian, Spanish, Australian and American riders have stood on the top step of the podium. The first to prevail was Kenny Roberts Jr in the opening race of the 1999 season, with Suzuki equipped with Brembo’s revolutionary radial caliper. The American repeated the feat in 2000, then the Italians won the following 6 editions, alternating on Honda, Yamaha and Ducati. On the other hand, Brembo brakes have always proved effective on any bike.
