New Brembo TY3 brake discs: the pros and cons

 Three reasons why you should buy Brembo TY3 brake discs and one why you shouldn’t

The new Brembo TY3 brake discs in the Brembo SPORT range are the ideal product for enthusiasts for both normal road use as well as high performance driving. A solution that combines a unique style, excellent performance and the ease of use of a plug-and-play product which is fully interchangeable with OE discs.

However, even the best products need to be put into the right context or they will risk being not suitable for the use that the buyer wants to make of them.

That is why in this article we will highlight not only the advantages that the TY3 discs offer, but also the cases in which they may not be sufficient and therefore not suitable and may leave even the keenest customer unsatisfied.

Let’s start with their advantages, limiting ourselves to the most well known ones:

 

​Higher friction coefficient

By using Type3 slotting, based on the design of discs used in the most important world closed wheel racing championships (including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Daytona, the discontinued WTCR and the Endurance and GT championships), braking efficiency is higher than an OE disc.

The friction coefficient is higher and this results in better performance especially during the initial stages of braking. The Type3 slotting ensures that the friction material, that is to say the surface of the pad, is kept clean and renewed which ensures consistent performance even when the number of braking moments increases.

 

​Perfect on wet surfaces

Even when driving on wet surfaces, Type3 slotting guarantees better performance than other discs because it prevents a layer of water from forming on the braking surface when it rains.

When rain water is deposited between the disc and the pad, it reduces the pad’s grip on the disc and significantly reduces braking efficiency.

With the slotting designed by Brembo, rainwater is dispersed more quickly improving safety for the driver and the vehicle’s occupants.

 

​Instantly identifiable

In addition to its technical content, the Sport TY3 disc can be identified by fifteen or so slots of different lengths and depth designed and positioned in a way that is not random, but based on years of research and prototypes as well as by the Brembo logo which can be seen on the brake ring.

A choice that underlines the sporty vocation of these components and was previously found only on discs used in racing. Even the most distracted of spectators can immediately recognize the brand which symbolizes excellent quality and aesthetic refinement.

The importance of a systemic approach

Behind all these considerations, one aspect is often overlooked.

The brake system should be considered a holistic unit designed to work best when each of its components makes its own contribution. Brake pads and discs must be designed to be at their best when working together.

The TY3 discs are not separate components, but are part of a range that also includes brake pads and fluid and are designed to be used together.

When you choose Brembo TY3 brakes you choose a product designed to guarantee the best performance when combined with other components in the Sport range: the SPORT | HP2 brake pad, silver in color like the disc, and the SPORT | EVO500++ brake fluid.

 

​Just one is not enough

Unfortunately, when subjected to extreme use, just one TY3 disc is not able to sustain the increased force required by the brake system as a whole. TY3 discs are recommended for those who want to modify their car for a more dynamic performance on the road and sometimes on the track on an occasional track day.

However, if the thermal stress that the brake discs are subjected to is increased significantly (this depends a lot on what they are used for and how), relying solely on TY3 discs may not be the best choice since these are the same size as the original discs.

In these cases, using only sports discs and pads such as TY3 and HP2 may not be enough. You may need to use a Brembo GT upgrade kit capable of adding opposed-piston calipers and especially two-piece composite oversized discs which can dissipate heat much better than the original discs.

Specially designed for track sessions, Brembo GT kits have discs with a wider diameter and in many cases consist of two pieces with a cast iron braking band and aluminum bell, a solution that allows the braking band to expand when subjected to thermal stress without deforming. Aluminum opposed-piston brake calipers and high-performance pads, which are included in the specific kits, contribute to the high performance. This results in the pressure on the brake pedal being constantly stable and the stress caused by heat being reduced.
