The 2018 ranking of the top 35 best braking cars in the world

9/6/2018

In Auto Motor Und Sport's ranking of the best braking cars in the world, 48 out of 59 models have Brembo's brakes.

You probably have already seen around the ranking of the year's best looking, fastest and even the most expensive cars. All of us at Brembo would like to offer you something different, yet not less interesting. We are referring to the ranking of the 59 best braking cars.

The Auto Motor Und Sport magazine is a world bible for car lovers and has collected the data, in particular for the most powerful ones. Regularly the German fortnightly magazine prints the ranking that answers the following question: "Starting from a 100 km/h speed, how much distance do the world's best cars need to get to an halt?".

The tests have been carried out during several days of work with two persons on board and after warming up the brakes: 9 heavy braking events first, then the tenth that is used for measuring. An impressive work that has led to drawing up a ranking of the 59 cars that require less than 33 meters to stop.

As many as 48 out of these 59 are equipped with Brembo's brakes, that is 81% of the total. For the models that use at least one of Brembo's braking components you will also find the description of the system.

For the others, the competition must not be disappointed if we have only shown the braking value and the car's technical specifications.

For fairness, we have to emphasize that the performance in braking doesn't only depend on the calipers, discs and master cylinders that have been used.
In fact, given the same braking system, the result depends on the car's weight, aerodynamics and of course on the tires that have been used. For this reason, we have specified its engine, the tires that are fitted and the dry weight for each car.

For those that use Brembo's components you will also find the braking systems' specifications and the advantages they assure. As Auto Motor Und Sport's ranking included various versions of the same car (just think of the 10 versions of the Porsche 991), we have decided to group together the versions of the same model and to only consider the version with the best braking performance.

The ranking therefore includes 35 positions taken up by as many different models and is published backwards starting from the last places up to the first ones.
Methodological note: In the case of an ex-aequo, that is, several cars with the same braking distance, we have decided to list them according to their weight and to place the heaviest cars in a better position.
The fundamental reason for this choice is that if more than one car brakes from 100 km/h to 0 at the same distance, the heaviest has the most stressed braking system. Now that we have finished this very long introduction, let's get going with the ranking!

35th place Lotus Evora + Evora S – from 100 km/h to 0 in 32.9 meters

Tires: 235/40/19 front, 295/35/19 rear
Weight: 1,355 kg (dry)

The top braking performance for this sports car is assured by the monobloc calipers, with 6 pistons in front and 4 pistons at the rear.
The version for Auto Motor Und Sport's test was equipped with 350 mm carbon-ceramic discs made by Brembo SGL Carbon Ceramic Brakes. These calipers have a stiffer body and a reduced weight assuring a shorter travel and a precise modulation.

Features
Engine: 4 cylinders 1,984 cc with 280 HP at 6,200 rpm
Tires: 235/35/19 front and rear
Weight: 1,390 kg (dry)

Brembo's braking system are a must when a compact car is transformed into a sports car.
Thanks to the Sub8 Performance Pack with Brembo's 4 pistons calipers, this small 280 HP car can rely on the lightest solution and the best braking performance possible for a car like this.
It's been surprising also for us to see how this “small” car, even though it's equipped with Brembo's brakes, can have a braking performance that is in line with far more expensive and high-profile supercars.

Features
Engine: 6 cylinders 3,436 cc with 320 HP at 7,200 rpm
Tires: 235/40/18 front, 265/40/18 rear
Weight: 1,464 kg (dry)

When Porsche wants to make the difference, whether it's the Dakar, the World Endurance Championship or just road use, it relies on Brembo's brakes: it's happened for a long time in the races and it happens every day with this car.
Brembo's fixed calipers have 4 pistons in the front and at the rear and use several opposed pistons that allow a more precise action of the pads and a more uniform friction surface wear.

NOTE This car is in the ranking also with the Cayman GT4, that can boast a 100 km/h to 0 in 32,9 meters braking.

Features
Engine: 4 cylinders, turbo 1,991 cc with 381 Cv at 6,000 rpm
Tires: 235/35/19 front and rear
Weight: 1,480 kg (dry)

Such a beast has lots of electronics made in Germany but when it comes to brakes it can't do without the Italian technology: in front it has 350 mm cast iron ventilated discs that work with Brembo's 4 piston fixed calipers.
Brembo's caliper and disc production quality makes the performance requirements match with those of comfort and of car aesthetics coherence.

Features
Engine: V8, 6,208 cc with 631 HP at 7,400 rpm
Tires: 275/35/19 front, 325/30/20 rear
Weight: 1,674 kg (dry)

No ordinary braking system could have matched the Black Series' extraordinary performance.
Brembo's carbon-ceramic discs are the unavoidable choice, in practice they are not apt to deform at high temperatures even after being used repeatedly: Their diameter is 402 mm in the front and 360 mm at the rear.
Brembo's 6-piston calipers act on the first while 4-piston calipers on the latter. Both of them are fixed and monobloc with obvious advantages in regard to light weight and performance.

Features
Engine: 6 cylinders turbo 3,493 cc with 580 HP at 6,500 rpm
Tires: 245/35/19 front, 305/30/20 rear
Weight: 1,725 kg (dry)

Hard braking on the limit are a routine for this supercar that needs plenty of braking force but also a performance that is consistent over time. Which is the secret? Brembo's aluminum monobloc calipers, that are machined from a single piece of cast aluminum, that assure an exceptional stiffness and reduced deformation.
The brake discs for the model that has been tested by Auto Motor Und Sport are instead carbon-ceramic. This is a material that Brembo has been using to manufacture its brake discs ever since 2002 and it assure the highest braking performance combined with a reduced weight. The system's weight is minimal, the performance is assured.

Features
Engine: V10 5,204 cc with 525 HP at 8,000 rpm
Tires: 235/35/19 front, 295/30/19 rear
Weight: 1,750 kg (dry)

Audi's prototypes have won nothing less than 13 editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Brembo's brakes.
The satisfaction on both sides has also spread to the road supercars: In fact this model uses a braking system by Brembo consisting in 380 mm front and 356 mm rear carbon-ceramic disc as well as Brembo's monobloc calipers.
It's a braking system that is made of various parts that have to work together with the highest degree of integration and efficiency possible in order to assure long lasting reliability and comfort. Brembo with its exclusive system approach can now assure this full integration.

This because it internally manufactures all the parts involved in the braking action (disc, caliper, pads and hub carriers) and then it assembles them providing its customers with complete and integrated braking modules. In order to combine the light weight, performance, comfort and stile features required by the world's most exclusive and high performance cars.

Features
Engine: 4 cylinders turbo 1,742 cc with 240 HP at 6,000 rpm
Tires: 205/45/17 front, 235/40/18 rear
Weight: 895 kg (dry)

A light car such as this needs braking components that can make it as responsive as possible and very fast in changing direction. In order to achieve such results it uses in front Brembo's aluminum fixed calipers that are very compact and have 4 pistons.
Brembo's co-cast and drilled discs (305 mm and 292 mm) instead provide the light weight and a consistent performance.
