Brembo presents a new ventilated disc for commercial vehicles with an innovative new star configuration for the ventilation pillars and manufactured using special high carbon, low silica cast irons.
The most significant advantages offered by the materials used and the exclusive ventilation system are:
- a reduction in disc weight between 7 and 10%;
- reduced operating temperatures;
- reduced risk of thermal shock and consequent disc failure;
- increased operational life for both pads and the disc itself;
- increased active safety as a result of the unique shape of the pillars, which arrest the propagation of surface fractures in the disc.
This new star pillar ventilation system designed and patented by Brembo substantially improves resistance to possible cracks forming in the surface of the disc.
A thermal shock test conducted by Brembo engineers and technicians demonstrated that, after 100 brake applications, cracks in Brembo discs with star ventilation pillars were arrested at 8 mm, whereas crack propagation in conventional discs with vane type pillars continued to as much as 31 mm.
This equates to greater safety of the system as a whole and greater durability of the disc itself.
